Gematria is a very old idea: that the letters of a word carry numbers, and that adding those numbers reveals a value worth reflecting on. The practice began in ancient Hebrew and Greek tradition and has travelled into modern numerology, where it is used gently - as a mirror for thought, never as a forecast or a fact about your life.
You give each letter a number, then add them up. The calculator above shows two of the most common systems side by side. In the Pythagorean method the letters A to I are 1 to 9, and the cycle then repeats (J=1, K=2, and so on); the total is reduced to a single digit, while the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept whole. In the ordinal (or simple) method, A=1 through Z=26 are simply summed.
Both are valid - they answer slightly different questions. The Pythagorean reduced number is the one most numerology uses for names, because it lands on a single archetype from 1 to 9 (or a master number). The ordinal sum is a fuller, un-reduced value that some prefer for comparing words. This tool gives you both so you can sit with whichever speaks to you.
