Gematria calculator: the number in a word

Gematria is the practice of finding the number hidden in a word by adding up the values of its letters. This free calculator does it two ways - the Pythagorean method (A=1 to I=9, repeating, then reduced) and the simple ordinal sum (A=1 to Z=26) - for any name, word or phrase. For reflection, not prediction.

What is gematria?

Gematria is a very old idea: that the letters of a word carry numbers, and that adding those numbers reveals a value worth reflecting on. The practice began in ancient Hebrew and Greek tradition and has travelled into modern numerology, where it is used gently - as a mirror for thought, never as a forecast or a fact about your life.

How does gematria work?

You give each letter a number, then add them up. The calculator above shows two of the most common systems side by side. In the Pythagorean method the letters A to I are 1 to 9, and the cycle then repeats (J=1, K=2, and so on); the total is reduced to a single digit, while the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept whole. In the ordinal (or simple) method, A=1 through Z=26 are simply summed.

Pythagorean or ordinal: which should you use?

Both are valid - they answer slightly different questions. The Pythagorean reduced number is the one most numerology uses for names, because it lands on a single archetype from 1 to 9 (or a master number). The ordinal sum is a fuller, un-reduced value that some prefer for comparing words. This tool gives you both so you can sit with whichever speaks to you.

Where does gematria come from?

Gematria has deep roots - in the Hebrew letter-number tradition, where each of the twenty-two letters carries a value from alef at 1 to tav at 400, and in Greek isopsephy, which works the same way with its own alphabet. We honour that lineage as inspiration while keeping this tool open to everyone: it uses the universal Western letters, asks no belief, and reads for reflection only. Read more about the tradition.

Questions about gematria

What is gematria?

Gematria is the practice of giving each letter a number and adding them up to find the value of a word or name. It began in ancient Hebrew and Greek tradition and lives on today in numerology, offered as a way to reflect on the meaning a word may carry.

How do you calculate gematria?

You assign each letter a number, then add them together. This calculator shows two common systems: the Pythagorean method, where A=1 up to I=9 and the cycle repeats before the total is reduced to a single digit, and the ordinal method, where A=1 to Z=26 are simply summed.

Is gematria the same as numerology?

They are close cousins. Gematria is the step of turning letters into a number; numerology is the wider practice of reading meaning into that number. Our name and birth-date calculators use the same Pythagorean method on your own name.
